Project Description
Takoradi Port has relatively
shallow water depths at the inner harbor. A pier that handles clinker and
bauxite is suitable only for self-propelled barges, so these products must be
re-handled at a ship mooring location.
To improve the efficiency of the port and reduce ocean freight costs,
Ghana Ports & Harbours Authority engaged Halcrow via a USTDA grant to
investigate port improvements.
Energy Associates assisted Halcrow on the dry bulk handling facilities.
For:
1. Ghana Bauxite Company, which operates a bauxite export
terminal,
2. Ghacem, Ltd., which operates a cement plant, and
3. Ghana Manganese Company, which operates a manganese export
terminal.

These
facilities were examined to gain an understanding of the operating requirements
and issues for each facility to assess how they might benefit from improvements
and expansion plans being considered by Ghana Ports and Harbours
Authority. A variety of expansion
schemes were considered to evaluate the long-term improvements and the need for
the additional/larger storage requirements that Panamax vessels would require.
